Team aims to reinvigorate grocery group
Somerfield, the private equity backed grocery group, has poached a top B&Q executive.

B&Q's commercial director John Cleland is to move to Somerfield as retail director. He will join former Asda boss Paul Mason, who was recently named Somerfield's chief executive, as well as ex-Tesco man Colin Smith, who is trading and marketing director.

The trio aim to reinvigorate the food group, which also owns the Kwik Save chain, by making the most of Somerfield's increasing presence in the convenience market.

At B&Q, Cleland will be replaced by finance director Regis Schulz. A spokesman for B&Q owner Kingfisher said: 'Regis has been heavily involved in developing the B&Q strategy and commercial agenda.'

Somerfield was taken over by acquisition consortium Violet, whose members include venture capitalist Apax and serial dealmaker John Lovering, at the turn of the year in a£1.1 billion deal.
