Demand for fine wines helped specialist wine retailer Majestic push pre-tax profits up 16.7 per cent to £7.5 million in the 26 weeks to October 1.

The retailer said 38 of its 141 UK stores will have a dedicated area for fine wines by Christmas, as sales of bottles priced£20 or more jumped 17.5 per cent against last year.

Majestic chief executive Tim How was upbeat ahead of the crucial festive trading period. “Overall, the market is challenging, but we are well prepared and confident,” he said.

E-commerce sales rocketed 22 per cent on last year and, following the relaunch of its web site, Majestic hopes that e-tail will account for up to 8 per cent of total sales by the end of the year.

Like-for-like sales increased 2.5 per cent for the period, with total sales hitting£91 million.

The improvement in sales at Majestic was achieved against tough competition. “Supermarkets are still the biggest wine sellers in the UK and recently there have been many deep cut-price promotions, particularly from Tesco and Sainsbury’s,” said How.
