Strong profits hike last year
Snow+Rock's slow but steady expansion programme is rolling on, with the opening of a store at Wirral in Liverpool expected in October.

The shop will bring the sportswear and equipment retailer's store total to 13. A spokeswoman said the retailer intends to open one store a year, with no set limit to the portfolio.

In its latest financial statement, Snow+Rock recorded a£1.9 million jump in profits in the year to August 31 last year, to£2.9 million. Turnover also increased but at a much slower rate, from£28.12 million in 2003 to£30.4 million in the past financial year.

In July last year, Andrew Brownsword, founder of Forever Friends greeting cards, acquired Snow+Rock for an undisclosed sum. The sale toppled former managing director and founder Mike Browne.

Brownsword's acquisition ended a period of turbulence within Snow+Rock's management. In April last year, managing director Dion Taylor led a failed management buy-out for the company. At the time, a source close to the company estimated its value to be less than£20 million.
