Third-quarter figures on the up
Transatlantic jeweller Signet is running a national Christmas TV advertising campaign for its H Samuel chain for the first time.

The initiative is one of a range being undertaken at home and in the US to ensure the store group makes the most of the seasonal selling period, which accounts for 40 per cent of annual sales.

Signet revealed a third-quarter group profit of£3.8 million on sales ahead 5.7 per cent to£328.2 million. The figure took into account a£1.2 million adverse impact of foreign exchange movements.

In the UK, total sales rose 2.4 per cent to£92.7 million during the period, resulting in an operating loss of£1.1 million compared with a loss of£2.5 million in the comparable period last year. Like-for-likes increased 3 per cent.

Profits at the US business rose 2.1 per cent to£9.7 million on sales 7 per cent up to£235.5 million. Comparable sales increased 6.5 per cent.
