Shopper numbers were up by more than a quarter on Boxing Day compared with the same day in 2006 as more retailers launched their Sales on the day this year.

According to Footfall, shopper traffic was up 25.1 per cent on Boxing Day 2006. The company attributes this to more retailers opening on December 26, whereas the Sales have traditionally kicked off on December 27.

“Many retailers launched their official January Sales a day early yesterday and succeeded in drawing shoppers out of their homes and onto the High Street," said Footfall owner Martin Davies.

"Boxing Day has become more of a shopping day than previous years, with many people now reducing their shopping-free days to just one over the festive break."

Davies added that the launch of many Sales before Christmas did not seem to have had an effect on the success of the early Sales after Christmas.
