Bhs has opened the doors of its first food hall at its store in Staines, Middlesex.

The 3,450 sq ft Bhs Food Store carries a convenience-style offer ranging from snacks and confectionery through to prepared food, meat, fruit and vegetables and wine, as well as other convenience lines such as washing powder and newspapers.

There is a strong emphasis on value amid ferocious price competition in the grocery market as discounters Aldi and Lidl grow apace.

If the trial is successful Bhs’ owner, tycoon Sir Philip Green, is likely to open more food halls across the estate and may devote as much as 10% of space to food.

Product sold in the store has been supplied by wholesaler Booker.
