House of Fraser has reported a 5.3% lift in like-for-likes over Christmas boosted by its biggest-ever online trading day on Black Friday.

The department store group said online sales on Black Friday jumped 40% year on year, while total sales on the day rose 10%.

House of Fraser said sales in the seven days before Christmas rose 6%, with online revenues up 61.8% and store sales rising 2.2%.

In the seven days after Christmas, like-for-likes rose 6.8%.

Across the Christmas period, the six weeks to January 2, cash gross margins rose 6.4%, the retailer said.

Sales from its buy-and-collect service also increased 22%.

Chief executive Nigel Oddy said: “We are delighted with our Christmas trading performance both in terms of sales growth and margin improvement.”

He added that it proved the success of its strategy, which includes boosting its online offer and investing in its stores.

House of Fraser last year restructured as part of a bid to have a more “customer-centric” approach.
