Retail sales rose 3.6% by value and 1.8% by volume in November compared to the same month last year.

The rise in sales, as recorded by the Office for National Statistics, was driven by fashion and footwear, where the value of sales rose by 9.1% during the month. Volumes increased at a slower pace but were still up 6.8%. Food sales increased 3.3% by value, and 1.3% by volume in the month.

Despite the overall increase in sales, those selling goods for the home suffered, with a 5.9% decrease in sales by value and a 5.7% fall in volumes.

Non-store retailing continued to grow, with sales up 6.4% by value and volumes up 7.1%. Internet sales now account for 10.5% of retail sales, compared to 7.9% last November, the ONS says.
