Like-for-likes up for seventh consecutive quarter
Grocery giant Sainsbury's unveiled impressive results for the first six months of the year, reporting its seventh consecutive quarter of like-for-like sales growth at 6.2 per cent.

The UK's third biggest supermarket also revealed total sales had risen 8.3 per cent for the 28 weeks ending October 7 and underlying profit before tax was up 60.2 per cent to£189 million.

Underlying operating profit increased 28 per cent to£215 million.

Sainsbury's said the strong results were down to a focus on 'healthy, safe, fresh and tasty food' to meet with customer demand. The retailer also reported better quality products, lowered prices, improved product availability and customer service as important factors.

Sainsbury's chief executive Justin King said: 'We have made good progress during the first six months of the year. A strong performance on food together with good performances from online and non-food have driven higher sales densities which are up 5.6 per cent.

'We have now delivered£1.3 billion of additional sales after 18 months, which is just over halfway towards our target to grow sales by£2.5 billion by March 2008.'
