Roger Matthews is latest in executive exodus
Sainsbury's finance director Roger Matthews is to quit amid fears the supermarket is poised to make its third profit warning later this month.

The retailer announced that Matthews, 50, will retire at the end of the financial year next March. His departure is the latest high-profile exit at the store group. Deputy managing director Sara Weller, head of non-food Keith Evans and head of supermarkets Stuart Mitchell have all left in recent months.

Sainsbury's chairman Philip Hampton said: 'Roger indicated his longer term intentions when I was appointed earlier this year. We both consider that now is the best time to begin to move towards an orderly succession. We have started the process for the appointment of his successor and our timing should provide for a smooth handover of responsibilities.'

Matthews, who joined five years ago from Compass, plans to 'develop a portfolio of interests in both the public and private sectors within which he also hopes to address his passion for sport'.
