Sainsbury's clothing sales have rocketed 65 per cent
Sainsbury's clothing sales have rocketed 65 per cent in the two years since it launched its TU range.

The supermarket group, which has been playing catch-up with Tesco's Cherokee and Asda's George in the fashion stakes, claims that one in five Sainsbury's customers now buys from the TU range.

From November, the range will include 100 per cent cashmere sweaters and cardigans for£35. It has just introduced men's suits, with jackets at£39 and trousers at£20.

At present, Sainsbury's offers the TU range in 236 stores and has sold 35 million items from the range since launching in 2004.

The grocer plans to achieve non-food sales, which are up 8 per cent year-on-year, of£700 million by March 2008.

At present, non-food accounts for just under 10 per cent of the retailer's£17.3 billion annual sales. Sainsbury's is to report second-quarter trading next week.
