Security systems overwhelmed by wily shoplifters
Retailers have been warned that they could be failing to do enough themselves to tackle crime. Criminologist professor Martin Gill, working in conjunction with AXA Insurance, warned that retailers are being negligent about security, relying on technology such as CCTV to keep them out of harm's way.

He notes that retailers are being targeted largely by opportunistic criminals and simple measures to combat crime may not be enough.

Gill said: 'Armed robbers will often not return to the same place, but shoplifters are only too aware of how to get past cameras and security alarms. They know how to remove the security tag or feign innocence when the alarm goes off. It's not surprising that they go back because to them it's so easy.'

Findings of the BRC's latest annual crime survey, published last September, revealed Total losses from retail crime costs retailers£1 billion a year. BRC policy advisor Nick James said retailers faced a tough time from the public who tend to see crimes against business as victimless.

He said: 'Another problem for retailers is that even when they catch criminals, the police are unable to respond properly. Where arrests are made, offenders are often not punished beyond cautions or minor fines due to strain on the courts and wider criminal justice system.'
