Retail Solutions - The Edinburgh Woollen Mill gets centralised PoS

Edinburgh Woollen Mill has installed a PoS solution from Retek, which has gone live at the retailer's 280 outlets.

The system is managed centrally and supports cash management, inventory management and store layout management, which enables the retailer to cope with sudden increases in footfall. Many Edinburgh Woollen Mill stores are situated in tourist areas and experience daily and seasonal fluctuations in shopper numbers.

'We required a scalable PoS solution that can handle our significant spikes in transaction volume, such as when a tour coach stops at one of our destination sites,' said IT director Ed Sansom.

The system replaces the retailer's EPoS software, but some legacy hardware has been retained. 'The lower hardware specifications required to run Retek's Java-based solution on Linux will extend the life cycle of our critical in-store till hardware,' said Sansom.

The retailer claims the system has helped to cut till training times significantly. Sansom said the time needed to get trainees up to speed has been reduced from 10 hours to two.
