Retail Solutions - Naafi chooses Telefonica for VPN

The Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (Naafi) has signed a three-year deal with Telefonica, worth more than EUR1 million (£667,400), to provide a Virtual Private Network (VPN) backbone for its ERP system.

The system will provide support for Naafi's retail stores across the UK, Germany and Northern Ireland.

Telefonica's VPN is a network that can carry voice and data, based on the same technology as the Internet.

It is shared by several customers, but provides a service that acts in the same way as a dedicated line.

Naafi hopes to use the solution to access, record and track stock, supplier deliveries invoices and payments for all its stores, at any time and from any location. The first two phases of installation are already complete and include up to 80 sites.

Naafi IT manager Chris Baxter said: 'Telefonica showed that it could not only deliver a solution, but also own it. This was extremely important, because a number of incumbent suppliers required management during the transition phase. This, together with a cost advantage over other suppliers and the ability to demonstrate a robust support service, convinced us that we should enter a partnership.'
