Retail chiefs lent their support on Wednesday to the third annual traffic-free shopping day in London’s West End, which is to be held on December 1.

Arcadia and Bhs boss Sir Philip Green, Marks & Spencer chief executive Stuart Rose, John Lewis Partnership chairman Charlie Mayfield and Hobbs managing director Nick Samuel are promoting next month’s extravaganza, which has been extended to include Bond Street, as well as Oxford Street and Regent Street.

“We would want to be involved in any initiative that encourages customers to visit this vibrant shopping district,” said Green.

Mayfield said that he was looking forward to welcoming customers again on “what is fast-becoming a red-letter day in London’s shopping calendar”.

Separately, the New West End Company launched its£34 million five-year business plan to reduce congestion and push proposals for a new transit network on Oxford Street.
