The property proposition has been wholly unrealistic for years now. It's been propped up by pop-ups, under the table rent deals, and over- leveraged foreign companies who had little idea of what they were letting themselves in for when they opened up shop in the UK.

Then of course we have our wonderful system of business rates that nails the coffin lid down on many retailers.

Next year it's predicted that there will be even more carnage on the high street when 40% of shop leases fall due for renewal.

As someone who has just closed his final high street store due to crippling overheads, I'll be watching with interest to see what happens.
