Being different can of course be a strength [not proved under Charlie Mayfield] however in this case appointing an executive chairman with no retail experience whilst the company goes through significant change to re-position its offer is not going to help JLP no matter how bright the person is as retail is a time served industry.

This appointment then means they will be unable to add value for some considerable time and will have to rely on senior department directors/ managers to be the merchants in the business and given there previous history of getting it horribly wrong [Andy street and his reckless over spend on online] this business more than many needed a first class retailer to add value.

Justin King was the correct appointment.
