Sony hand-held device on sale from midnight
Sony's much-hyped PSP (PlaysStation Portable) will be available in the UK from midnight tonight. The company promises to supply 1 million units to stores by Christmas to meet a huge anticipated rush for the product.

Retailers had feared that demand for the hand-held gaming device could outstrip supply. WHSmith, Game and HMV reported that pre-orders had already taken up the majority of their first supply. Dixons has been taking pre-orders since May.

However, Sony has acted to reassure the market with a pledge to deliver the consoles to retailers. The units will be priced at£179.99 and can be used for games, movies and music.

The PSP launched in Japan last December and in the US in March, enjoying a huge success.

Hot on the heels of the PSP, Apple and Motorola are expected to launch a combined mobile phone and iPod next month. The ROKR will feature iTunes software, enabling users to download music from their computers.

Sony has already released a competitor product. The W800 Walkman will be priced at£300 and doubles as a phone and a 125-track music player.
