Developers have unveiled plans to build the UK’s biggest new out-of-town shopping centre since Bluewater, with construction work set to start later this year.

Lateral Property Group and investment firm Highgrove Group will develop the mall, named Axiom, in Castleford, West Yorkshire. It plans to open the centre in 2021.

According to documents released by Lateral, high street stalwarts Marks & Spencer, Next, Primark and Boots have already signed up to the 600,000 sq ft scheme.

The “next generation” centre will boast more than 75 retail, restaurant and leisure units.

The wider 106-acre site will also feature 3,000 car parking spaces, a country park and a 10,000-seater community stadium, which will host rugby league club Castleford Tigers’ home games.

Lateral said Axiom would provide “a constantly changing, innovative retail and leisure community designed for the Instagram generations”, which would “deliver convenience, experience, excitement and delight” to shoppers.

The two-and-a-half year project is set to create 1,100 construction jobs and more than 2,000 roles once the centre opens.

Lateral Property Group co-founder Philip Lunn said: “The scale of Axiom means that we have the space and flexibility to draw from the best retail and leisure innovations from around the world and curate them in one place.

“Axiom will be a constantly changing retail and leisure community that will be relevant to customers in an omni-experience world.”
