Property News - Second Xscape complex is unveiled in Castleford

Capital & Regional has opened its second Xscape leisure and retail development, at Castleford near Leeds.

The development provides 430,000 sq ft (39,950 sq m) of leisure and retail space, and has been developed at a cost of£56.5 million by C&R and Hanover Property Unit Trust.

The scheme is expected to attract 5 million visitors in the first year.

The biggest draw is the UK's longest indoor real snow ski slope - at 175m long, it contains 1,500 tonnes of real snow. The leisure offer is also underpinned by an air park, skate park, ice wall and rock-climbing walls.

Xscape Castleford is more than 85 per cent pre-let. The retail element is anchored by ski specialist Ellis Brigham in 10,200 sq ft (950 sq m) and Legends Surf Shop in 10,000 sq ft (930 sq m). Other retailers signed up include Big Air, True Spa, Adrenalin Junkie, Land Rover Gear and GT News.

Xscape also houses a 14-screen Cineworld multiplex cinema and 20-lane Bowlplex bowling alley. Restaurants and bars include Nando's, Ask, Frankie & Benny's, Tootsies and Lloyds No 1 Winter Seam bar.

PY Gerbeau, chief executive of X-Leisure, Capital & Regional's leisure management operation, said: 'Xscape Castleford Leeds offers a mix of activities that will appeal to many different groups. These include the youth market looking for extreme action, families on a fun-filled day out, and corporates and businesses looking for something slightly different.'

The first Xscape centre opened in Milton Keynes in November 2000.
