Property News - Plans lodged for £500m redevelopment in Bristol

The Bristol Alliance, a consortium of Land Securities, Morley Fund Management and Hammerson, has lodged a planning application for the£500 million redevelopment of the Broadmead shopping district in Bristol's city centre.

The developers plan to create a new gateway to the city, with a landmark four-storey department store - rumoured to be earmarked for Selfridges - at the junction of Bond Street and Newfoundland Street. This will be the subject of a separate planning application with its own specialist architect.

In addition, the masterplan by architects Chapman Taylor envisages another 15 major stores, 100 shops, 2,600 car parking spaces, more than 310,000 sq ft (29,000 sq m) of office space and a range of leisure uses, including bars and entertainment facilities.

The Broadmead scheme was granted outline permission by Bristol City Council in December 2002 and has been endorsed by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

The historic Quakers Friars element of the scheme received detailed consent in April this year. Detailed consent will enable the Alliance to commit further to the scheme, with work beginning in summer 2004 and completion scheduled for 2007.

Bristol Alliance development director Bob De Barr, said: 'Bristol is an extraordinary city with a special history. We believe that all of this has been reflected in the design of quality buildings to create a vibrant retail and public environment that will attract shoppers from a much wider catchment are. The scheme will act as a catalyst for further investment in Bristol.'
