Property News - Middleton gets green light over extension plans

Warner Estate and Bank of Scotland's Agora shopping centres fund has received planning permission to refurbish and extend its Middleton Shopping Centre in Greater Manchester.

The Middleton centre represents the majority of the retail offering in the town centre and now Warner plans to build a 45,000 sq ft (4,000 sq m) extension to the existing 284,000 sq ft (26,400 sq m) scheme.

Warner Estate will also reconfigure and extend the centre's car park.

The extension will provide space for several new 6,000 sq ft and 10,000 sq ft (550 sq m and 930 sq m) stores. Existing tenants include Tesco, Wilkinson, WHSmith, New Look, Argos and Boots.

Warner Estate property director Richard Moore said: 'The project, coupled with the redevelopment of the transport interchange, will give the Middleton Shopping Centre a radical revamp over the next few years.'

Work on the major development is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2005 and is due to be completed by 2006.
