Property News - Madrid's Xanadu wins gong for innovation at European awards

Europe's largest shopping centre, Mills Corporation's Xanadu in Madrid, picked up the special award for innovation at the 29th ICSC European Conference in Rome last week.

The judging panel said it has 'the potential to offer a model for future out-of-town retail development in Europe'.

The large centres award went to Galeria Lodzka, a 415,000 sq ft (38,555 sq m) project by German developer ECE in Lodz, Poland.

Sonae Imobiliaria's CascaiShopping in Cascais, Portugal bagged the award for refurbishments/extensions.

The prize for best small centre was won by Armada Shopping and Trade Centre in Ankara, Turkey, with a commendation certificate going to Parade in Nootdorp, the Netherlands.

Riofisa's El Muelle scheme in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria won the best new speciality centre award.

Chapman Taylor was the architect for the schemes in Madrid and Gran Canaria.
