Property News - Flagships set compass for Centrale

Croydon's Centrale shopping centre has taken another major step forward with the opening of a trio of new flagship stores.

A three-level 4,740 sq m Next store, trebling the retailer's presence in Croydon, and a 1,950 sq m Zara store are already trading. Canadian fashion and footwear retailer Aldo is due to open next week.

Lindsey Robinson, development director at St Martins Property Group, the developer behind the scheme, said: 'The arrival of Zara and Aldo and the substantial expansion of Next within the town centre underlines the importance of the Croydon market.'

Centrale's three main shopping malls are due to open next Easter. Deals have been struck recently for The Pier, represented by Harper Dennis Hobbs, to take 650 sq m of space and La Senza, represented by Capital Retail, to take a 300 sq m store.

Other tenants who have signed up include Allsports and Ernest Jones, with a further four deals in solicitor's hands.

The centre's final phase, a new 15,610 sq m House of Fraser is due to open in autumn 2004. Centrale's Upper Mall will link directly to Croydon's existing Debenhams department store.

Cushman & Wakefield Healey & Baker and CB Hillier Parker are Centrale's letting agents.
