Value fashion giant Primark has taken a big step towards overtaking Marks & Spencer as the UK’s biggest clothing retailer by volume, according to the Telegraph.

The Associated British Foods-owned retailer grew its market share by 2 percentage points to 10.1 per cent in the year to February, according to TNS Worldpanel Fashion.

M&S’s market share edged up from 11.3 per cent to 11.4 per cent over the 12-month period.

Tesco’s share of the market rose from 8.2 per cent to 9.3 per cent, which puts it within touching distance of M&S.

George at Asda increased its share from 8.3 per cent to 8.7 per cent. Last week, George managing director Anthony Thompson revealed he wants to make George the UK’s largest retailer of clothes by volume by 2011.
