Discounter still afloat, while some rivals have foundered
Discount fashion retailer Primark, owned by Associated British Foods, increased like-for-like sales by 6 per cent in the 24 weeks to February 28, as it prepares to integrate six Allders stores. The rate of like-for-like sales growth was level, compared with figures for the previous full year.

Two stores were opened during the period, while one small store was closed, bringing Primark's estate to 121 outlets. The Allders stores acquired on February 14 are expected to open this autumn.

ABF turnover for the period was£2.37 billion, while group profit on ordinary activities before taxation was£219 million.
