Gucci owner PPR said that Christmas sales had been good, despite festive trading fears.

Shares in PPR, which owns brands including Puma and Yves Saint Laurent, tumbled 5 per cent.

PPR finance director Jean Francois Palus said: “Christmas sales were globally satisfactory and in line with our expectations.”

He added that earnings for 2007 would improve on the previous year's figures.
