Chief executive, Home Retail Group
It hasn’t been an easy year for Terry Duddy. Home Retail’s flagship business, multichannel group Argos, took a profits hit as consumers watched their spending in important categories such as furniture, and Duddy’s annual cash bonus was halved as a result.
But the affable Duddy also has a street-fighter’s determination to win and is rising to the challenge with initiatives such as a push into categories complementary to Argos’s core offer, such as children’s clothing, or branching into TV shopping.
Duddy’s personal influence will be felt more than ever at Argos while he assumes direct leadership responsibilities following the departure of managing director Sara Weller.
The suggestion that the supermarkets are eating Argos’s lunch or that its business model has been superseded niggle Duddy. It’s safe to assume that for him getting Argos back on form isn’t just business, it’s personal.
