Poundland plans to open a further 35 stores in its next financial year as it continues to benefit from the consumer downturn.

The growth will increase the single-price retailer's portfolio to 240 stores. It opened 40 shops in 2008.

Poundland chief executive Jim McCarthy said: “We are committed to continuing our ambitious expansion plans even further next year. With an existing store base of 200, we will open at least 35 new stores to give even more shoppers the amazing value that Poundland has offered for the last 18 years.”

He added: “Times are tough and customers know Poundland offers quality brands at the incredible£1 price point on all products every day. We are convinced that Poundland will continue to help shoppers through the tough times in even more locations next year.”
