Poundland enjoyed a strong Christmas, revealing its like-for-like sales climbed 3.9 per cent in the five weeks to January 4, 2009.

Total sales rocketed 24.3 per cent in the period.

The single-price point retailer said it demonstrated steady growth in all areas of the business “as customers continued to look for value for money on the high street”.

Poundland said sales in confectionery and Christmas cards and wrapping paper were particularly strong over the five weeks.

Chief executive Jim McCarthy said: “It is clear that Poundland has been one of few retailers reporting growth during the 2008 Christmas trading period. We are well positioned to capitalise on the continuing strong customer trend to seek value for money. Well over 2 million customers every week have enjoyed the benefits of saving money on top brands at Poundland.

"We plan to increase the store base significantly, opening a further 30 stores to help even more customers through the tough times ahead and create over 1,000 new jobs.”
