The former Shadow Business Secretary, who was briefly a candidate for the Labour leadership, has retained his passion for retail and is a cheerleader for the initiative Small Business Saturday.

The campaign, inspired by the US scheme of the same name, takes place in the UK this Saturday and is now in its fourth year.

In an exclusive interview with Retail Week, Umunna also covered key retail issues, including the future of high streets, business rates, the image of retail and Brexit.

He also called for a more positive image of retail to be promoted. “Often retail is written up in a negative way,” he said. “That we’ve become this big consumer society obsessed with spending, but the bigger things we get (from it) is huge.”
