The Metropolitan Police is holding an emergency briefing for major UK retailers to update them on the riots taking place in London, Retail Week has learnt.

A meeting was scheduled for 4pm and is taking place right now to share intelligence with major retailers which have borne the brunt of the riots in the capital over the past few days, and advise them on how to prepare their premises for further attacks.

It is understood several of the UK’s leading retailers, along with the BRC, are represented at the meeting.

A large number of stores owned by major UK retailers have been attacked in the riots, which started in Tottenham and Wood Green on Saturday and spread to areas including Enfield, Brixton and Walthamstow last night.

At present, Marks & Spencer’s stores in Hackney, Brixton and Wood Green are closed, while four Dixons stores are closed too. Stores in several areas of north London, including Hackney, are understood to be closing early in anticipation of trouble later.
