Play.com has today launched PlayDigital, its challenge to iTunes.

Play.com is the first major UK retailer to offer digital tracks and albums without Digital Rights Managements (DRM), meaning customers can download tracks and share them between their iPod and other MP3 devices without having to use iTunes.

Individual tracks will be 14p cheaper than iTunes and albums will be available from£4.95 with the top 100£1 cheaper than Apple’s download offer.

Head of PlayDigital, Wendy Snowdon, said: “We’re delighted to be the first UK retailer to market with a DRM-free MP3 Music Download Store. It’s an exciting development for Play.com to be leading the way with such a service ahead of obvious competition.”
