Hammerson and Morley have submitted a planning application to Peterborough City Council for a mixed-use scheme in the North Westgate area of Peterborough city centre.

The 731,970 sq ft (68,000 sq m) scheme will integrate with the existing Queensgate Centre, which will also be modernised. It will form a series of pedestrianised streets and squares and hopes to create landmark buildings, with new links to the wider city. Including the Queensgate Centre, the scheme will measure 1.6 million sq ft (149,000 sq m).

“The introduction of an exciting new range of fashion and lifestyle retailers will attract even greater numbers of visitors to the city, with the new entertainment and restaurant elements providing an attractive evening destination in its own right,” said Hammerson UK development director Michael McGuinness.

The scheme will centre around a street delivering 322,930 sq ft (30,000 sq m) of double-height accommodation comprising 50 shop units and five large flagship stores. The street will be covered by a glass roof that links through to a square and the Queensgate Centre.

Marks & Spencer has been signed to anchor the scheme with a 161,465 sq ft (15,000 sq m) store. There will also be a second anchor with a 64,585 sq ft (6,000 sq m) space. The scheme also includes cafés and restaurants, as well as a cinema, hotel, 100 apartments, a bus station and 3,300 parking spaces.

Subject to planning consent, construction of the development could begin in 2009, with completion scheduled for 2013.
