The South African took charge after Majestic acquired the online business he founded, Naked Wines, in April last year.

Not only has he changed the culture of the business and given staff their “mojo” back, but Majestic’s retail arm is back in like-for-like sales growth.

Despite “disappointing” figures from Naked Wines in the US and the below-par performance of Majestic’s commercial arm, Gormley is pleased with how his tunraround of the business is progressing and tells Retail Week there is more to come.

“I think we’re still in second gear. We’ve got like-for-likes going positive, which is great, but there’s so much more to come,” he says.

“When we laid out our transformation plan a year ago, the essence of it was to take £8m out of opening stores and put it into acquiring and retaining customers and capability.

“There’s a big pipeline of stuff to come over the next two years, from new websites, to new data management capability, an enhanced supply chain. So there’s an awful lot to be delivered still.”
