At Justin King’s final AGM last week, Sainsbury’s chairman David Tyler joked he hoped there weren’t any competitors in the room when he read out the name of one of the grocer’s shareholders who wanted to ask a question: Philip Clarke.
And when Philip Clarke – not the Tesco boss – himself came to the podium he congratulated King on his tenure and added: “I hope Mike [Coupe] doesn’t suffer like my namesake.” Ouch.
