River Island has launched a redundancy programme, with roles at its London head office expected to be slashed.

The news arrives after it was announced earlier this week that the fashion retailer has drafted in AlixPartners for ā€œcost reduction and profit improvementā€.

The jobs expected to be cut are understood to be roles across departments including buying, merchandising, and HR, according to Drapers.

River Island did not comment on the number of jobs that were at risk of going when contacted by the publication.

The retailer employed 1,126 office staff as of December 2023. Its recent results to December 30 2023 showed a pre-tax loss of £32.3m, compared with a profit of £7.5m in 2022.

It attributed the 15% sales drop to a ā€œchallenging trading environmentā€.

Along with River Island, this week Sainsburys announced it was axing 3,000 jobs while Morrisons is making 200 roles redundant.
