Rakuten’s Play.com has made 82 redundancies at its head office as part of its plans to streamline operations onto a single global platform.

Rakuten, a Japanese etail giant, began the consultation process in April, as revealed by Retail-week.com.

A Rakuten spokeswoman said: “We have now completed the formal consultation process at Rakuten’s Play.com and can confirm that 82 people have left the company as a result of this process.

“Where possible, we identified opportunities for team members in other parts of the Rakuten business and several have subsequently taken up new roles across the organisation. We would like to place on record the company’s thanks to everyone concerned and we wish them all well in the future.

“The changes have streamlined the operations at Rakuten’s Play.com and has put the company in a strong position to move forward in supporting the future growth of the marketplace model and Rakuten in the UK.”
