Ryan Cheyne is people director for Pets at Home and Retail Week Rising Stars 2014 Awards judge. He speaks to Retail Week about his life in retail.
What was your first job in retailing?
I was a Saturday team member at Argos in Watford. I loved it and three years later I became a store manager.
Which retail company do you admire most and why?
Metro Bank are an amazing retail business.
What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?
I work best when up against tight deadlines. Everything gets done but it is not great for my blood pressure.
Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?
I’ve learnt so much from so many people. From my first manager at Argos, Nancy McManus, to the team at Pets at Home, I’ve worked with some amazing people. In retail you have to learn from everyone you come into contact with – the good, the bad and the indifferent.
What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?
Turn up on time, work hard, support your team members, have fun and do whatever you can to amaze your customers.
What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Hearing the stories from customers who’ve had a great experience is the best feeling.
What’s your proudest achievement?
Being named as the Best Big Company to Work for by The Sunday Times last year was an emotional evening.
What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?
My original plan was to work for Argos during the day to fund my international rock star career in the evenings. Clearly I’m better at retail.
What’s your favourite shop and why?
I love Waitrose. Its products are great but most impressively, in my experience, their Partners deliver the Waitrose brand consistently across the country.
