Our colleagues need to love pets and they need to get why people are emotional about their pets, but they also need to be able to speak to people. They need to be pet people and at the same time offer friendly advice to our customers.”

What is the Pets at Home work ethos?

“At the heart of the business are our five values: we have fun, we work as a team, we take pride, we do what we say we will do, and we get better every day.”

As a workplace, what sets you apart from other retailers?

“There’s a real emotional element of what we do. 90 per cent of our colleagues own pets
and there’s a real bond between us and our customers’ pets.”

How do you strive to retain your staff?

“We put an awful lot of effort  into the training and motivation of
our colleagues. We also take an annual survey to gauge how engaged they are with the business.”
