Former JD Sports boss Peter Cowgill is considering a comeback in the world of fashion retail with a luxury menswear brand, The Telegraph has reported.

Cowgill, who was previously the executive chair of JD Sports, is understood to have been contacted by a private equity group about taking on a senior role at Mainline Menswear.

JD Sports owns Mainline Menswear and is reported to be speaking to prospective buyers for the designer fashion marketplace as it looks to focus more on sportswear.

Sources told The Telegraph that private equity and trade bidders were interested in Cowgill being involved in any successful offer, while the brand’s founder Stuart Hicks has also been approached about heading up the business if a sale was successful.

Cowgill stepped down from his role at JD Sports in 2022 after 18 years after the Competition and Markets Authority fined JD Sports £4.3m following a secret meeting between Cowgill and Footasylum boss Barry Bown where they were accused of sharing commercially sensitive information.

The investigation found Cowgill and Bown deleted phone records and that the two had held multiple clandestine meetings, including one that was filmed in a car park near Bury, Greater Manchester.
