British fashion and lifestyle retailer Paul Smith has named a former Fortnum & Mason chief executive as a non-executive director.

Ewan Venters has been announced as a new non-executive director at Paul Smith in a newly-created role to “add his experience and strategic insight to the development of one of Britain’s iconic brands”.

Venters has joined the business having most recently been chief executive of contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth.

He was also the chief executive at luxury department store Fortnum & Mason for eight years between 2012 and 2020 and during his time at the business oversaw a period of “unparalleled success for the brand”.

He also previously held a senior leadership role at Selfridges.

Venters remains chair of the private sector council of the GREAT campaign, a campaign looking to bolster the UK’s business reputation overseas.

He was also awarded an OBE in 2024 for services to international trade.

Venters said of his appointment: â€œI am thrilled and honoured to be appointed to this role,” said Venters. “I have been friends with Sir Paul for some time, and I have long been an admirer of what is indisputably a great British brand. This is a very exciting moment for the Paul Smith label, and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

Sir Paul Smith, founder and chair of the business, said: “Ewan is joining us at a pivotal moment for the company as we consider a number of key strategies to shape the future of our special brand.

“Ewan’s extensive experience in the retail, hospitality and cultural sectors will bring a welcome fresh perspective on what we do.”
