Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King’s total remuneration fell 6 per cent last year.

King took home just over £2 milion, down from just under £2.2 million last year. His basic pay was £872,000, which doubled with his bonus and was topped up with pension contributions and other benefits. His salary will rise 3.2 per cent to £900,000 this year.

Sainsbury’s finance director Darren Shapland’s total remuneration also fell by £75,000, but he has been granted a salary increase of 9.2 per cent and his basic pay will rise to £560,000 this year.

The total remuneration of trading director Mike Coupe rose by a third following his promotion to the board, to £937,000.
