Discount greetings cards retailer Card Factory has poached PricewaterhouseCoopers retail and leisure director Andy Garbutt to spearhead future development.

Garbutt, who joined on Monday, has taken up the position of corporate development director at the Yorkshire-based retailer, which was the subject of a private equity bidding war before eventually being sold to Charterhouse for about £370m in April.

It is a first retail role for Garbutt, who had a keen interest in the value sector in his role at PwC, where he worked for eight years.

Card Factory has hired from PwC before, when it poached its partner in corporate finance Darren Bryant as group finance director. Chris Beck, who heads up commercial, used to work at accountancy firm Grant Thornton. Card Factory, founded by husband and wife duo Dean and Janet Hoyle, is understood to have clocked up £210m in revenue in the year to January 31, generating underlying profits of £53m.
