Fashion selling well
Value clothing retailer Peacocks has insisted it is faring well in the value clothing war and that its fashion credibility has been proved against stiff competition.

The retailer said that its seasonal lines, such as the jumper dress, have been great successes.

Head buyer Jane McNally said that, despite press comment about the absence of strong fashion trends, Peacocks' experience showed otherwise. She said: 'Anything 60s inspired is selling really well. We have spent£2 million on jumper dresses in a variety of styles this season. With selling prices starting at£10, that is a whole lot of dresses.'

A£25 Houndstooth swingcoat sold out in its first week and leopard print court shoes have been selling at a rate of 50,000 pairs a week since August.

On Tuesday, value fashion powerhouse Primark unveiled a 3 per cent rise in like-for-like sales for the year ending September 16 and revealed that a large expansion programme, costing£221 million, is now approaching completion.

However, Peacocks is convinced it will hold its own. A£15 million investment is in progress across the group, which will enable the eponymous and Bonmarche chains to open 30 stores each. A store refit programme is also under way. The expansion programme will be completed by March next year.
