Online sales are on track to exceed £5 billion in December, according to UK payments association Apacs.

The organisation revealed that the number of adults who shop online has more than doubled to 30 million in the past five years. December 3 is likely to be the most popular day to shop online.

Apacs director of communications Sandra Quinn said: “More and more of us are buying our Christmas presents online and the evidence suggests we like to do so about three weeks before the big day, to ensure they are delivered on time.”

Apacs also estimated that total spending will rise 4.2 per cent to£53 billion in December, compared with last year.
