Wet weather drove more shoppers online in July, when e-tail sales reached £4.8 billion for the month.

Spend on clothes was up 23 per cent and total online sales rose 11.3 per cent month on month, according to figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

Online sales in the electricals sector, which has been particularly hit by tough trading, experienced their strongest growth this year helped by demand for the new iPhone and flatscreen TVs ahead of the Olympics.

July’s total spend was equivalent to every person in the UK spending£79 online that month.

Capgemini UK head of consulting for retail Mike Petevinos said: “Gloomy market conditions have not dampened consumers’ appetite for shopping online. Online sales continue to show strong growth, particularly when compared with the tough trading conditions on the high street.”
