Online grocer Ocado is to enable shoppers to order goods by scanning from a window display in an experimental venture reminiscent of an innovation tried by Tesco in Korea.

From this Friday until September 1, Ocado will run the shopping wall in One New Change, the shopping centre in the City of London.

A printed window display will feature popular items and shoppers will be able to use the retailer’s smartphone app to scan barcodes below, add them to their basket and book a delivery time.

In July, footage emerged of a Tesco trial of a similar shopping wall in Korea. The footage went viral online and prompted consumer excitement.

The Tesco film revealed how the walls would work in subway stations in Korea, featuring images of a virtual shop with shelves stacked full of products and showing technology developed by Tesco, which allows shoppers to order direct using smartphones to take photos of products.

Although the technology has been developed, Tesco has not yet launched the service but is considering whether to - if it does, it could be introduced in the UK at locations such as tube stations.
