Machester store is its largest to date
Next opened its largest store to date in Manchester yesterday, as veteran chairman David Jones revealed he will retire next May.

The three-floor, 82,000 sq ft (7,615 sq m) shop is the centrepiece of a revamp of the city's Arndale centre and overlooks Exchange Square.

The shop features a curved glass wall and has homewares on the ground floor, menswear and childrenswear on the middle level and womenswear on the top floor. It also includes a card and wrap area, a first for the retailer, and a dedicated customer order collection point.

Next has been finding the going tough on the high street, with like-for-like sales down 2.9 per cent at its interims last month. Analysts have noted it is suffering at the hands of a resurgent M&S.

Jones is being replaced by deputy chairman John Barton.
