Sainsbury’s boss Coupe defends pay ahead of AGM

Sainsbury’s boss Mike Coupe has defended his pay package, which is likely to face shareholder scrutiny at its AGM later today.

Coupe was handed a package worth £3.9m last year, despite sales falling and its planned merger with Asda being blocked by the CMA.

Some shareholders have criticised the grocer for the scale of his remuneration – and Sainsbury’s is braced for a backlash at its annual meeting today.

But Coupe said: “My pay is set by a remuneration committee. It goes up, it goes down.”
